Iceni Programme 2025
ICENI 50th ANNIVERSARY OPEN 2025
THE ICENI OPEN & THE ICENI TRIBE (A Short History) The Iceni tribe occupied what is now Norfolk & Suffolk before the Roman conquest of Britain. Initially they were the allies of the Romans but after a change of Roman Governor in 60 AD a disagreement occurred. This prompted the leader Boadicea (otherwise known as Boudicca) to lead a rebellion against the Romans. During this time they sacked Colchester, London and St Albans. But they were caught and defeated by the Roman Governor Suetonius Paulinus at or near Fenny Stratford. Following this defeat Boadicea committed suicide and the Iceni tribe was subdued for the remainder of the Roman occupation. THE MEDALS The medals presented today are unique, having been specially minted, based on an Iceni coin unearthed in the area some time ago.
